What is Guest Blogging?
What is Guest Blogging?
Guest blogging is when a blogger offers to write content for other similar blogs as a guest. In exchange, they receive a link to their own blog and an opportunity to promote their own name and blog. The purpose is to build a reputation, increase awareness of the blogger and ultimately to drive more traffic to the bloggers website and to provide the host site with content and improve their traffic. It’s a win-win scenario for both parties.
Should you Guest Blog?
Guest blogging can work extremely well and it will continue as a useful growth strategy however there are a few guidelines to follow to make sure you make the most of it.
Ideally you should be growing your own blog with two to three blog posts per week. Building your own blog with quality content will increase your sites search engine rankings over time and allows you to keep control of your audience and direction. It provides opportunity to convert your web visitors to customers.
However it is hard to build a large audience with blogging. It requires constant blogging more than once per week, and not everyone has time to do that. Guest blogging can be a useful alternate means to drive traffic to your site.
How to go about Guest Blogging.
You will need to do a bit of research on finding sites that take guest bloggers. There is a list at the bottom of this article that will help. Pick guest blogging sites that fit your niche. There’s not a lot of benefit from pitching a blog post on plumbing to a fashion site unless you can create a connection. Take time to select the sites you want to guest post. Read the blog and become familiar with the content. Engage with the blog by posting genuine and helpful comments to get noticed.
Focus on how you will bring value to the host rather then self promotion. Blatant self promotion and pitches that serve only your needs won’t get you published. Make sure your guest post is researched and thorough. Aim to provide quality content that’s better than what’s already on the site. This will get you noticed and more likely to be published.
Make sure your work is polished.Your aim should be to reduce the workload for the site publisher or editor. If you produce sloppy work then you’re adding to their workload, not reducing it. If the editor needs to spend hours rewriting your work it’s faster for them to produce their own content. So make sure your writing is free of grammatical errors and typos and it’s structurally sound.
Emailing editors is another option but it’s likely that you won’t get a response unless your email stands head and shoulders above the rest. Editors get potentially 100’s of emails per day so even if they do reply it may take awhile. Another option is to build connections and rapport with already established content contributors. Send them feedback and suggestions on their work and build connections over time. The relations you build can open doorways and provide introductions.
